From employment to entrepreneurship: Liam Wilson talks about his journey at FAB
Just 18 months into starting Elevate Accountancy, Liam Wilson has already navigated challenges many practitioners only face years into launching a new firm. At the upcoming Festival of Accounting & Bookkeeping (FAB) on 12–13 March at the NEC, Birmingham, Wilson will share his personal insights on making the leap from employee to entrepreneur – covering the highs, lows, and the lessons learned while growing a people-first accountancy practice.
Taking the leap
In his session, Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway: From Employment to Entrepreneurship, Wilson will discuss how he transitioned from a comfortable role in someone else’s firm to managing his own business. Despite Elevate’s short history, Wilson and his team have developed a robust client approach, balancing technology with genuine human connection.
“Not everyone’s perfect at getting things in early, and circumstances come up,” Wilson told AccountingWeb in a recent interview. “Our main goal is to help clients, so we work with them rather than penalise them.”
Building a client-centric model
Elevate Accountancy has chosen consistent communication over aggressive follow-ups or financial penalties. From questionnaires sent out at the start of each tax year to automated CRM workflows, the practice ensures that client contact feels helpful rather than burdensome. For Wilson, this approach isn’t just good customer service – it’s the backbone of his firm’s culture.
“If automated reminders don’t work, we switch to WhatsApp or text – these direct messages get a great response,” he notes. “Phone calls are our last resort because it takes more team time, and we’re about efficiency.”
Growth and adaptability
Beyond efficient client management, Wilson’s talk at FAB will highlight the mindset shifts needed to build a firm from the ground up. He’ll outline what it takes to attract new business, manage stress as an owner, and guide a small but growing team toward bigger goals. Attendees can expect candid advice on maintaining momentum – even when stepping outside one’s comfort zone.
